Penny has signed! Varitek's future?

's official: Brad Penny is a player for the Boston Red Sox! After passing a medical today (Friday), the new starting pitcher has become formally part of Red Sox Nation. As mentioned in previous post, Penny will join the starting rotation in Boston in 2009.

As for Jason Varitek, Captain of the Red Sox since 2005, still do not have some news. The catcher, who made the line up in Boston during the victorious campaign the 2004 and 2007, could not leave for the Spring Training in Boston for the first time after ten years of honorable service.

Meanwhile, Josh Bard, the backup catcher last year, has signed for one year. Theo Epstein also continue to keep all options open: "We have two young catcher who did a good job last year in Pawtucket (a satellite of the teams the Red Sox NDR): Dusty Brown and George Kottoras. We have also put under contract Josh Bard for one year, a person you trust and whom we see as an important solution behind the plate. ".

The question is thus far from being closed or resolved. Certainly that it is difficult to imagine the Red Sox without Tek. Although he had his worst offensive season (.220 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI), for his teammates is a point of reference: to quote the words of Pedroia: "It 's hard. We have no control about it. Obviously, we hope to return with us because it is an essential part of the club. ".
